Facebook has launched new mobile applications called Messenger for Mobile in order to compete with other mobile group chat services such as Google+ and Blackberry's BBM.
The application appears to take aim at internet giant Google's recently launched Google+ social network's group chat feature called Huddle.
The group chat functionality comes at a time when social networking chat services are coming under the spotlight as an organisational vector for criminals in the widespread riots and looting across the UK.
Facebook said that the application also enables make it easy to message everyone at once and see where your friends are. The iPhone application takes a different approach to Google's offering by integrating group chat, email and messages in the same place and also interacts with SMS texts.
The application is now listed as 'coming soon' and will be offered via the iTunes App Store and the Android Marketplace.
