External storage sales down

External storage sales down

Sales of external storage solutions fell in the first quarter of 2009, according to the latest figures from IDC.

It found that revenues across EMEA fell by 19.1 per cent compared to 2008, to $1.36bn, as the recession and fluctuations in the currency markets took their toll, reports Microscope.

However, while revenues were down, companies have continued to spend, often shifting their focus to smaller, cheaper solutions. "It's tough out there," said programme director for European storage research at IDC, Eric Shepard.

"Companies are spending money, but clearly they are shifting to lower cost arrays, and have put the brakes on big projects," he added.

Sales of external arrays under $15,000 grew by 27.6 per cent. However, those over that price fell by between 25 per cent to 30 per cent.
