The European Commission is expected to approve Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems, as the deadline for a final decision approaches.
The Commission announced today that it expected a “satisfactory outcome” following new assurances from the companies that competition would be upheld in the market.
Oracle has been engaged in discussions with the EU regarding the maintenance of Sun’s open source database MySQL following the companies’ merger earlier this year.
“In particular, Oracle's binding contractual undertakings to storage engine vendors regarding copyright non-assertion and the extension over a period of up to 5 years of the terms and conditions of existing commercial licenses are significant new facts,” the Commission said in a statement.
“Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes recalls and confirms her statement of 9 December 2009 that she is optimistic that the case will have a satisfactory outcome, while ensuring that the transaction will not have an adverse impact on effective competition in the European database market.”
The Commission opened an investigation into the Oracle Sun deal on 3 September 2009 and has until 27 January to reach a final decision.
News of the impending approval comes as MySQL founder Michael 'Monty' Widenius appealed for people to write to the Commission to block the deal.
"I have spent the last 27 years creating and working on MySQL and I hope, together with my team of MySQL core developers, to work on it for many more years," he wrote in his blog.
Without your immediate help Oracle might get to own MySQL any day now," he added. "I just don't buy it that Oracle will be a good home for MySQL."
