A US judge has ruled that a six-year ban on drones isn’t legally binding.
National Transportation Safety Board Judge Patrick Geraghty said that the FAA "has not issued an enforceable Federal Acquisition Regulation regulatory rule governing model aircraft operation”.
The decision was made as part of a case in which the FAA has been attempting to fine drone-maker Raphael Pirker $10,000 for filming the campus of the University of Virginia with a camera-equipped drone.
Pirker argued that no FAA restrictions forbid "model aircrafts", and Judge Geraghty agreed in his favour.
The ruling means that small unmanned devices are now allowed can now be flown free of possible charges, and could pave the way for services such as Amazon’s drone-delivery to take flight.
