American novelty audio specialist Speakal have announced a partnership with the BBC in order to produce Doctor Who Tardis and Top Gear Stig-branded speaker systems.
The iPod-compatible devices incorporate a built-in digital amplifier with 25W of power handling capability along with an integrated subwoofer. The T.A.R.D.I.S replica is also equipped with Bluetooth playback, enabling audio to materialise directly into the classic blue box.
“Top Gear and Doctor Who have some of the most diehard fans of any program in the world” said Speakal boss David Solomon. “We’re proud to offer their fan base these unique and lifelike replicas of their favorite BBC icons.”
The Top Gear-themed device is based on the iconic white Stig helmet although it appears hot on the heels of the controversial outing of the Stig’s identity as racing driving Ben Collins amid a spectacular falling out with BBC bosses. Collins has since appeared on Five rival show Fifth Gear.
In the Christmas special edition of Top Gear, hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May made their dissatisfaction with the former Stig quite abundant in a sketch that saw them practice drive by shooting techniques on an array of cardboard Stig-figures.
However at the end of the Christmas special, the Top Gear Team had driven across much of the Middle East in order to get to Bethlehem where instead of the birth of baby jesus, they witnessed the birth of a baby Stig. On that basis it seems the BBC is clinging to the Stig brand, through thick and thin.
