Retailer also increased its market share in white goods, says Jessops departure 'clearly helped'

Dixons Retail enjoys sales boom in “sexy” appliances and DSLR cameras

Dixons Retail revealed some of its top-selling product categories of the moment in a media call this morning.

Chief executive Sebastian James said the DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera market was "booming", adding that the company – which owns PC World and Currys – sold a camera every 30 seconds this summer.

"A number of products are doing really well for us – we’re having a terrific time particularly with white goods and large domestic appliances, and we’re having a booming time with small domestic appliances which have got much more sexy over the past couple of years, like KitchenAid emerging in those markets," he said.

"DSLR cameras are a big growth area for us – and tablets continue to be a very fast-growing part of the market.

"We’re gaining market share with cameras, white goods and domestic appliances. We’ve had a big market share gain in TVs."

James also said that Jessops leaving the market "was clearly helpful" [although it has now returned].

"And I think people are recognising the value of having a good camera in the house to take better quality pictures," he added.
