Dennis Ritchie, the developer of C and co-creator of the Unix programming languages, has passed away.
The programmer, known as dmr in online and usenet circles, was best known for creating Unix in collaboration with B creator Ken Thompson, the two men realised the limitations of Unix (which utilises machine language) and developing the syntax and functionality to create C.
C is still one of the most popular programming languages in the world and forms the basis for Java and C++, while Unix was adapted by Linus Torvalds to create Linux.
Ritchie’s work in programming led to him being awarded the Turing Award in 1983 and the National Medal of Technology in 1998, among other accolades.
