The world’s second largest PC vendor has said it is to remove the vast majority of AMD loaded PC lines from its US web site, making them available only through its retail channels and over the phone. The news led shares in AMD to drop 4.7 per cent in the US.
Dell spokesperson David Frink told Reuters that the change will only affect consumer systems: “We regularly change the way we merchandise our product portfolio. Currently, this is the mix we’ve put in place for our consumer systems of all types.”
The apparent continued availability of AMD machines on both the US and UK Dell websites has led to some confusion. In an attempt to clear the issue up, Dell said: “Currently the majority of our consumer AMD-based systems are available through our retail partners such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Staples, and through telephone sales. Our AMD-based energy-efficient consumer desktop, the Energy Star 4.0 Inspiron 531 is also still available on Dell.com,” reported Channel Register.
As yet Dell’s AMD strategy for the UK is unclear – however the channel will no doubt be eager to find out more when the vendor outlines its retail intentions at the PCA conference next week.
