Dell has made the shock move of attempting to trademark the term Cloud Computing, something that commentators have suggested is doomed to failure.According to Dell's trademark application, which was submitted on March 23rd last year, it would be applied to all potential uses for the terms and not just on its own specific platforms.
However, many commentators including The Industry Standard's Cyndy Aleo-Carreira, have all pointed out that the term has not only been in use in general tech lexicon since at least 2001, there have also been attempts to trademark the term as far back as 1998, all of which have failed.
There is currently no word on when the trademark is set for review, although the application was printed for opposition back in April this year.
