Cuil, the search engine founded by a group of former Google employees that was once hailed as a ‘Google Killer’ has closed down.
According to Tech Crunch, the closure has come about after an acquisition deal fell through in its final stages, with reports that staff were told to go home and “forget about getting paid.”
Cuil launched to international fanfare in July 2008, and with its innovative search technology the site was being hailed as the successor to Google. However, a number of issues with the service were immediately identified.
Most famously, when Stanford University web researcher Dr. Jonathan Grattage entered his name in to the search engine, it incorrectly displayed images depicting hardcore homosexual pornography alongside mugshots of US military servicemen.
