AMD knocks up to 30 per cent of the price of its processors

CPU price war continues

In a move that has been anticipated for over a month, reports tech site Channel Register, AMD has cut the prices across its whole desktop processor range.

"From the top down, AMD cut the price of the 3GHz Athlon 64 FX-74 from $799 to $599, a drop of 25 per cent," said the site. "The dual-core FX-72’s price remains unchanged, at $599, but the remainder of AMD’s dual-core desktop CPUs, the Athlon 64 X2 line, all became cheaper by between 29.8 per cent and 15.4 per cent."

AMD had been expected to drop its single core Athlon 64 series, but chose instead to cut prices there too. The X2 3600+ and the X2 3800+ were dropped, however.

Channel Register expects Intel to riposte with its own round of prices cuts on July 22nd, at which time it will also make some product announcements.
