Corning Gorilla Glass 2 means thinner, brighter smartphones

US toughened glass manufacturer Corning unveiled the next generation of the damage resistant glass popular, Gorilla Glass 2, which the company says will enable 'sleeker' mobile devices with brighter images and better touch sensitivity.

Corning's Gorilla Glass is found in many different models of smartphone from manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC and Motorola. The improved Gorilla Glass 2 is said to enable glass that's up to 20 per cent thinner with the same damage resistance and scratch resistance.

The company said that some manufacturers were already working on incorporating the new glass, with devices to be announced in the next few months. Interestingly the company leapt into bed with Microsoft in the press release, specifically citing "new Windows PCs."

Laptops, rather than tablets, were specifically mentioned. So perhaps some new fancy Windows 8 ultrabook will come along with a Gorilla Glass 2 screen?
