Amazon, Argos, Play and Tesco headed up online retail in the UK during the past quarter, according to the latest UK Hot Shops List out from IMRG-Hitwise.All four, which have strong consumer electronics offerings, managed to retain the same positions as last quarter. However, the picture was less rosy for the computer vendors with Dell, Apple and HP all seeing falls.
UK market leader Dell saw a fall of four places from 13th to 17th, while HP fell to 48th, down nine places. However, the biggest faller was Apple, which slid 17 places to 19th.
Blaming many of the falls on declining economic conditions, IMRG's chief executive James Roper said: "With the market hardening under the daily hammer blows of worsening economic news, one would expect more volatility within the list."
However, he praised the top four for their continued success: "It is a measure of the competence that sets these brands out as market leaders that they consistently continue to attract high customer traffic volumes, even under harsh trading conditions."
