China hosts the most hacked PCs

More Chinese computers were subverted and drawn in to botnets than in any other country, including the US, according to a recent study by security vendor McAfee.

The Washington Post reports that during the last quarter of 2009, around 1.1 million PCs were infected in China, compared to 1.05 million in the United States. These numbers are in addition to around 10 million previously infected machines in each country.

“The government could crack down on botnets, but doing so would raise the cost of software or Internet access and would be controversial,” wrote Prof. Jack Goldsmith. “So it has not acted, and the number of dangerous botnet attacks from America grows.”
