Channel shows signs of recovery

Sales within the channel have dropped less than initially expected, according to the latest figures from IDC.

According to the market analyst, shipments of laptops and desktops worldwide fell by 3.1 per cent instead of the 6.3 per cent that had originally been forecast. Overall, for the three months to June 2009, 68.4 million units were shipped.

IDC described the figures as giving the channel positive signs for the coming quarters. It added that new product launches and improvements in the wider economy should help to boost growth even further.

However, IDC's director for its tracking programme Loren Loverde warned that the pick up would only be in the consumer market.

"The market continues to rely on consumer purchases, with a substantial weakness in the commercial space," she said. "We expect to see more of the same as we enter the busy shopping season of the second half of the year. In the longer term, an expected recovery in the commercial segment should boost growth in 2011."
