Sony showcased a number of new laptops for its Vaio portfolio at last week’s CES, unveiling the F, S, Y and W series.
Continuing the thinking behind previous incarnations of the Vaio product range, each series has been developed to fulfil a different market segment, with each item geared towards a specific use within the consumer or business sectors.
The F and S models both fit the profile of performance systems, emphasising processing and graphical power. The F series has been developed to fit the niche of a high performance multimedia PC. It features a 16.4-inch HD display powered by a quad-core i7 CPU and an Nvidia graphics chipset that utilises GDDR3 VRAM, and comes with a Blu-ray drive as standard.
Meanwhile, the S series is described as being for work or play, and while it doesn’t feature the display size and resolution, or the Blu-ray as standard, it still shows an emphasis on relatively strong performance. It is powered by the Intel Core i7, with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and includes an Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics chipset.
The Y series is geared towards everyday use and offers a modest 13.3-inch display and a battery life of around nine hours. It features a multi-touch trackpad and includes one-touch access to the Vaio Care troubleshooting service.
The W series is the ecologically friendly model. According to Sony, its casing is made from recycled CDs, the monitor contains no mercury, and the device has been awarded an Energy Star 5.0 certification from the US Environmental Protection Agency. However, unlike the other devices, the W series is powered by the 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor and only carries one gigabyte of RAM, so its performance is unlikely to rival its Vaio peers.
