BT has increased the fastest speed available to its broadband customers to 20Mbps.
The new speed, which is available at no extra cost to existing 8MB customers, is part of the company's plan to match those provided by unbundled rivals such as O2, and cable network Virgin Media. The operator has also boosted upload speeds to 1MB.
Currently 40 per cent of the UK can access the new higher speed, with BT aiming for 55 per cent of the country by March 2010.
