BT has played down speculation that it may be looking to launch a bid, dismissing recent reports as 'rumour and speculation'.
The telecoms giant has emerged as a potential bidder for T-Mobile UK operations, after France Telecom's finance director damped speculation over a possible bid by its mobile brand Orange for the network operator.
However, speaking to PCR, a spokesperson for the company said that it: "does not comment on rumours or speculation".
Speculation as to the future of T-Mobile emerged earlier this week, after sources close to the network operator's parent company told the FT that its two largest shareholders – the German Government and private equity group Blackstone – were pressing Deutsche Telekom to sell the UK division.
It is believed that BT's chief executive Ian Livingstone has been looking at how the telecoms-giant can stave off the danger currently posed by its mobile rivals. One option mooted has been for the company to re-enter the mobile arena – an area it pulled out of several years ago with the sale of O2 to Telefonica.
