BT has launched a free application iPhone and Android application for its Total Broadband customers.
The app will allow the devices to find and connect to the massive network of 1.6 million wi-fi hotspots in BT's FON network. FON is hosted by BT customers who have opted to share their broadband in order to gain access to the network.
"Millions of BT Total Broadband customers already get free access to the UK's biggest wi-fi network," said BT retail boss John Petter. "This free app makes accessing wi-fi so simple you don't even have to think about it. This represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are using their mobile phone to access the internet."
The telecoms giant also announced that it would give 50p to BBC Children in Need for each free BT FON application downloaded from the iPhone App Store or Android Marketplace up until £10,000.
Wi-fi access through BT customer connections is not limited or charged by BT which is a significant incentive for BT Total Broadband customers to sign up to the community wi-fi network, at least if they want to gain free wireless access on the move.
More details can be found on the BT FON website.
