Chiltern Railways has launched a mobile train ticketing application which allows even owners of low-end mobile phones to avoid printing tickets.
The London to midlands railway has installed a range of new ticket barriers which can scan QR codes from mobile phone screens thanks to the new application. Chiltern called the new app a 'pioneering new approach to ticketing.'
Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericcsson, Blackberry and iPhone handsets are supported with Android remaining the odd an out at launch with an Android app in development. On Chiltern's web site there's an option to tell Android handset owners when a compatible app is available.
The QIR code approach represents an alternative over the brand new radio-based NFC technology which is only now making it to high-end smartphones.
