Research in Motion, the company behind BlackBerry smartphones, has been named the fastest-growing business in the world by Fortune magazine.
Ontario-based RIM topped Fortune’s annual list of the 100 fastest-growing companies, with an average three-year earnings-per-share growth of 84 per cent and annualised revenue growth of 77 per cent. The three-year annualised total return of its shares is 45 per cent.
RIM has reportedly sold 65 million BlackBerrys since the device was launched in 1999, and now holds a 74 per cent share of the business smartphone market. The BlackBerry Curve is also currently the biggest selling consumer smartphone in the US, after outselling the iPhone in the first half of the year.
Californian chipmaker Sigma designs was named the second fastest-growing company, while Chinese internet company Sohu.com came third. A total of 24 businesses in the top 100 list were technology companies.
