Lorelei Gibb from Dolphin Computers talks about connecting through social media

Better Business: Always follow up

Lorelei Gibb discusses the importance of staying in touch with contacts you make at trade events…

If you attend a trade show, a networking event, or even PCR Boot Camp, you’ll meet an awful lot of people. There will be colleagues, peers, mentors, suppliers, potential business partners and clients. By the end of the event you may have a pocket full of business cards, your head swimming with faces, names, companies and ideas – so how do you capitalise on all this exposure?

Follow up.

I don’t mean that you need to email or call every single person that you made contact with – you don’t have time! But you do have time to follow them on Twitter, or connect on LinkedIn, or like their business page on Facebook.

Connecting through social media enables you to keep up-to-date with all of the contacts you have made without it taking all of your time and without it being intrusive to them. It shows you have acknowledged them, have shown an interest, and plan on maintaining the relationship.

And, of course, you need to make sure that everyone you have met can do the same with your business – how accessible and up-to-date is your online profile? Double check that those links on your website go to all of your social media accounts, and ensure you’ve made it easy for people to connect with you on whatever platform they are most comfortable with.

By all means email or call those that are most important to your current needs – or those you really did like and got on with – but don’t neglect the rest. You never know when they may come in handy….
