BBC releases global iPlayer for iPhone

The BBC has released new iPhone and iPod touch versions of the global iPlayer app where previously only an iPad version was available.

The worldwide service targets ‘millions’ of potential viewers of BBC content in outside of the UK including: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

"Moving to iPhone and iPod Touch allows us to take the service to a significant new potential audience and deliver fantastic programme content from the BBC and the UK’s creative industry," said BBC worldwide boss John Smith.

"We also want the global BBC iPlayer to be truly representative of the whole gamut of British creative output," said Global BBC iPlayer boss Jana Bennett during a keynote speech at the Digital TV Summit.

"Not just the Best of British TV but the Best of British Culture," she added.

The smaller iOS version extend’s the BBC’s love affair with the Apple platform. No mention was made of a tablet or smartphone version for Android.
