The BBC is considering investing in the iPad as standard equipment for its employees.
According to Mac World, the Beeb is currently using public funds to trial the device as a replacement for desktops and laptops, particularly for staff out on location.
“We're seeding the organisation with the devices,” said the BBC’s chief information officer John Linwood. “We put some iPads into production and some into management and other roles to see if people would be able to give up their desktop. Staff out on location a lot may be better off with a handheld device.”
The lack of USB and SD card support and file sharing via iTunes might prove to be something of an obstacle for a professional organisation, however the BBC is also reported to be testing other devices, including ones based on Android.
