Barnes & Noble has announced today that Nook HD tablet owners will get access to the 700,000-plus apps on Google Play.
The update will give Nook HD and HD+ owners direct access to their Google accounts with built-in Gmail, YouTube, Chrome and Google Maps apps. They will also have access to the Google Play music, book and video library.
“By adding Google Play to Nook HD and Nook HD+, we are offering our customers even more great entertainment on our award-winning tablets,” company CEO William Lynch said in a statement.
Earlier this week, Nook cut the price of its standard eReader drastically in a bid to push into the UK marketplace.
For a limited time only, as part of Nook’s involvement in the ‘Get London Reading’ literacy initiative, the Nook HD is available starting at £129 (down from £159), with the Nook HD+ starting at £179 (down from £229). Nook products are available at a number of key retailers including John Lewis, Argos, Asda, Dixons, Sainsbury, Waitrose, Blackwell’s and Foyles, as well as through www.nook.co.uk.
