AVG axes Search-Shield

AVG axes Search-Shield AVG has revealed that it will be revamping its realtime malware scanner after numerous complaints from webmasters that the fake traffic it caused was sending their hosting costs through the roof.

The software, which is used by more than 20 million people worldwide, had been affecting small and large websites, but AVG has confirmed that it will be rescinding the feature.

"We have modified the Search-Shield component of the product to only notify users of malicious sites," said a statement from the firm. "Search-Shield no longer scans each search result online for new exploits, which was causing the spikes that web masters addressed with us."

The firm has released a patch to update the software, which can be downloaded from its website.
