Apple launches iPad

Apple has today announced the launch of the iPad, a touchscreen device with a heavy emphasis on web browsing.

A special event hosted by CEO Steve Jobs was held in California to announce the new product, which as you would expect appears to have integration with iTunes, App Store, and Apple's other proprietry software.

One of the most interesting facts is Apple appears to have moved into the chip manufacturing business, announcing that the iPad is be powered by a 1GHz Apple A4 microprocessor. Apple once powered its devices with IBM chips, and more recently has relied on Intel's market leading kit.

The firm hired two former AMD chip designers last November, and bought PA Semi – a chip design company – in 2008.

The device is half an inch thin, weighs 1.5 pounds, is loaded with full capacitive multitouch, and has ten hours battery life.

We will bring you more news as it emerges.
