Apple was forced to temporarily close its Beijing store after a huge number of illegal traders – known as scalpers – rushed to buy large numbers of the iPhone 4.
According to 9to5Mac, the rush came about after Apple changed its sales limit from two per person to unlimited purchases. The change apparently immediately drew a huge crowd of people who were looking to sell the devices on the grey market.
Customers were reportedly leaving with as many as 30 boxed iPhones each, only to be seen attempting to sell them on to passers-by at inflated prices. Eventually, the store was closed due to security concerns.
Apple has now changed its sales policy once more, with every customer only allowed to buy one device, and they must show proof of identity. In addition, the Apple store staff will now activate a phone on purchase, reducing the options for those looking to sell on a ‘brand new’ device.
