Macs fail to capture market share while Windows fights among itself

Apple fails to cash in on Vista struggles

After 20 years in business, the Apple Mac still only accounts for three per cent of the PC global market share. According to the New York Times, the current share is a far cry from its 1984 share of 14 per cent. On the other hand, this years figure is a per cent up on 2004, perhaps a knock on effect of the iPod’s success.

In the six years since XP premiered, Apple have had plenty of time to launch an assault on the PC world, yet it seems efforts to capitalise have been relaxed. On launch the Vista incompatibility catastrophe became quickly evident with manufacturers as large as Dell, quickly performing U-turns on Vista exclusivity policies to calm the nerves of those needing a PC with no teething problems.

Yet, it seems Apple has been reluctant to take advantage of the window of opportunity. Granted figures show shipments of Macs are up 35 year-on-year, however this represents normal growth and has had no impact on the global share ratio.

According to Net Applications, a California based firm tasked with monitoring uptake of operating systems, the Mac has actually seen slight decline, when compared to Microsoft OS’s.
