Apple has cut around ten per cent of its workforce during the second quarter of 2009, according to documents released to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
According to the document, Apple cut its full-time workforce from 15,600 to 14,000 during the second quarter. It is unclear if the retailer made the roles redundant or shifted them to part-time positions.
The vendor saw its retail sales increase by one per cent ($20m), with the iPhone and MacBook sales accounting for the majority of the rise. It finished the quarter with 252 stores compared to 208. However, the rise in store numbers meant that stores' like for likes were down from $7.1m to $5.9m for the same quarter.
The retailer also revealed that it has $1.3bn worth of outstanding lease commitments, warning it "would incur substantial cost if it were to close multiple retail stores".
