Mac vendor leapfrogs competition to become third largest laptop vendor in US retail

Apple bites a chunk out of competitors

Apple leaped ahead of its PC-based rivals in the US on the back consumers switching from desktop computers to laptops according to a report released today by research firm NPD.

Apple was the third largest laptop vendor according to US retail sales the report said. Only HP and Toshiba managed to hold off the Mac manufacturer, with big names including Dell, Gateway and Lenovo falling behind.

NPD revealed that Apple took 17.6 per cent of the US laptop market through retail in June, up from 14.3 per cent in May. The increase of 3.3 per cent means it relegates Acer’s recent purchase Gateway into fourth place.

Apple’s market share remained at 5.6 per cent placing it in joint-third in the US. It is expected to benefit further thanks in part to back-to-school sales.

The news will be good news to those in the UK who are hoping that Apple will make a move into the channel.
