Android based smartphone shipments were up 379 per cent in the second quarter of 2011, according to new figures from Canalys.
The smartphone market as a whole grew 73 per cent year on year, with in excess of 107.7 million units shipping around the world.
39.8 million units were shipped in Asia Pacific, compared with 35.0 million in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and 32.9 million in the Americas.
Android was the most populous smartphone OS, leading in 35 of the 56 countries the firm takes data from. It now accounts for 48 per cent of the sector. The firm did particularly well in South Korea, with an 85 per cent platform share, and Taiwan, where it account for 71 percent.
20.3 million iPhones were shipped, gaining Apple a 19 per cent share. It overtook the often overlooked Nokia Symbian OS platform during the quarter to take second place worldwide.
Apple also became the world’s leading individual smart phone vendor, taking that title from Nokia as well.
