Several analysts have welcomed Michael Dell's comments, with some going as far as to suggest potential targets.Samir Bhavnani, an analyst with the NPD Group said that Asustek is a vendor that would boost Dell's market share, especially in the consumer space, with many in the industry, according to him, seeing it as the most important area for any company in the PC business.
"Asus has been on the bleeding edge of design and it offers UMPCs [ultramobile PCs], Linux-based PCs and high-end gaming systems," Bhavnani said. "One area that Dell needs to improve is with industrial design and that is one place within the consumer space that they are weak and not up to par with HP, Sony or Toshiba."
Bhavnani did, however, say that unlike past acquisitions, such as Alienware in March 2006, the brand would not remain a separate entity, rather being integrated into the Dell moniker.
Not analysts though have been focusing just on Dell's comments about a possible acquisition; one was Goldman Sachs analyst Laura Conigliaro. She said that the company's potential for short-term gain has increased significantly since it upped its channel presence.
Dell is not the only company to be receiving good news today though. Quanta, the world's largest manufacturer of laptop computers also announced that its profits hit $162 millon, exceeding expectations. It also said that revenue was up to $6.5 billion, up from $3.4 billion in 2006.
The company also went on to say that it expects laptop shipments for 2007 to break forecasts.
