Almost 100,000 Americans who downloaded porn movies were sued throughout last year.
The Inquirer reports that the majority of the file sharers used peer-to-peer BitTorrent software to download and seed porn movies from public torrent trackers.
The porn industry, one of the major victims of internet piracy, is seeking to recoup lost profits via the American courts.
The randy file sharers are sued in batches - in the 68 cases still open over 70,000 defendants stand accused of copyright infringement.
The figures are the work of an anonymous researcher, who collected publicly available results of US court cases.
Among the 100,000 downloaders sued, one individual paid $25,000 to settle out of court, while some porn studios offer torrent users the chance to settle for $1000 prior to action.
In the UK last year porn downloaders were taken to court by ACS:Law, but the cases were thrown out.
The law firm, acting on behalf of a string of porn studios, was forced to shut doors following a string of attacks from internet activist group Anonymous, who operate under the slogan “you call it piracy, we call it freedom”.
Illegal downloaders in America continue to face court action.
