AMD has hired ex-Apple iPod and iPhone boss Mark Papermaster as the chipmaker's new CTO and senior vice president.
Papermaster will oversee all of AMD’s engineering, research and development as the head of the new Technology and Engineering Group. Papermaster's previous focus on mobile products may point towards a renewed focus on mobile platforms by the Intel rival.
Reports suggested that Papermaster left Apple under a cloud, following a falling out with the late Steve Jobs. Possibly related to the iPhone 4 'antennagate' issue but 'cultural incompatibility' had also been cited.
AMD CEO Rory Read said the creation of the Technology and Engineering group was aimed at improving the firm's time-to-market and helping to 'lift execution' across the board.
"Mark’s appointment significantly strengthens AMD’s senior leadership," Read said. "Mark has held substantial engineering roles for three of the technology industry’s most innovative companies."
