AMD plan multiple-GPU cards

AMD plan multiple-GPU cards AMD recently stated at the recent Analyst Day conference, that it is to focus on technology that will put multiple GPUs onto a single card, which will form the company’s new high-end graphic products.

According to sources reporting to Digitimes, AMD is already working on technology for its Radeon HD 3000 series. The first is set to launch in January 2008 and will be called the Radeon HD 3870 X2, which consists of two RV670XT GPUs.

The cost of combining GPUs is higher than producing a single card, but AMD will save both time and money on the design and planning. AMD’s partners are expected to suffer, however, as their production costs will rise, as will power consumption and the size of the cards.
