AMD increases market share

AMD increases market share AMD has gained 2.5 per cent on its world share of the chip market, while Intel's 80.8 per cent share declined by two per cent. The figures mean that Intel's dominance of the market is gradually giving way to AMD, who with the launch of the much anticipated quad-core processor, Barcelona, have stamped their authority back on a market in which they were once considered doomed.

Throughout Q2, Intel made up 78.8 per cent of global CPU sales in terms of revenue. AMD's global share rose from 10.9 per cent to 13.4 per cent. The remainder of global share was taken by vendors such as VIA and ARM's licensees, who together represent 7.8 per cent of the global share.

Market researchers iSuppli said that specifically in the x86 processor business Intel were accountable for 80.3 per cent during Q2, while AMD represented 11.4 per cent.
