Benchmarks from an engineering sample of AMD’s upcoming Bulldozer processor suggest that the Intel-rival’s next-generation processor has the capability to rival Intel’s Sandy Bridge range.
Turkish website Donahimhaber.com got their hands on a processor purporting to be an AMD FX-8130P, a quad-core processor with a base clock speed of 3.2Ghz. Anandtech’s Chris Foresman poured over the numbers and concluded that the processor put in a performance somewhere between Intel’s Sandy Bridge Core i5-2500K and Core i7-2600K.
The benchmarks were not, however, a complete home run for AMD with disappointing PCMark 7 results of 3045, somewhat lower than AMD’s pre-existing processors. Anandtech had also previously noted that the approach taken by the new AMD Bulldozer core meant that performance is likely to be highly dependent on the type of workload.
The question is whether Bulldozer will arrive with a price advantage to Intel’s Sandy Bridge range. The clock is also ticking for the arrival of Intel’s Ivy Bridge with another process shrink and the ‘3D’ tri-gate ‘breakthrough’ likely to leapfrog whatever AMD manages to get out the door before then.
