Amazon has stated that the outage that it suffered on Satudrady was a result of hardware failure and not online ‘hacktivism’ as has been claimed.
An spokesman for the online retailer told Reuters that: “The brief interruption to our European retail sites earlier today was due to hardware failure in our European datacenter network and not the result of a DDOS attempt.”
Speculation had been raised over the possibility of a distributed denial of service attack as Amazon was one of the first private businesses to shift its stance towards WikiLeaks, when it decided to remove the site from its servers. However, Amazon has stated that this decision was based on violation of intellectual property laws rather than any political or moral issues.
Amazon is confirmed as being on the list of ‘hacktivist’ targets, along with Visa and Mastercard, but prior to the outage it was widely assumed that any attempted attacks on Amazon had failed due to its strong security and multiple redundancy system.
