Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader will be available internationally for the first time later this month.
Consumers from 100 countries worldwide can now pre-order the device from Amazon.com – the US site – and shipping will begin on 19 October.
“We have millions of customers in countries all over the world who read English-language books,” Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said. “Kindle enables these customers to think of a book and download it wirelessly in less than 60 seconds.”
Kindle uses 3G wireless technology to downloads books, magazines, newspapers and personal documents to its high-resolution 6-inch electronic ink display, which is designed to read like real paper.
The Kindle Store offers more than 200,000 English-language books from over 1,000 different rights-holders, including publishers such as Faber and Faber, HarperCollins and Penguin.
Over 85 newspapers and magazines are also available in the Kindle Store for single purchase or subscription including The Times and the Washington Post.
