The worlds third largest PC manufacturers Acer has begun discussions with a number of mobile network operators to supply its Aspire One notebooks with built in 3G.An Acer representative has said that the company is in talks with various Asian and European providers including T-Mobile, Vodaphone and Orange.
The deal would probably see mobile operators offering the notebooks free or at a subsidised price to customers to encourage people to sign up to 3G contracts.
The Aspire One is currently available with WiFi access but Acer also left room for WiMax or 3G modules as well. However, WiMax isn’t broadly available whereas 3G networks are up and running with particular concentrations in Europe and Asia.
The 3G model Aspire One utilises high speed downlink and uplink packet access to give users fast internet access nearly anywhere.
An Acer spokesman has stated that the negotiations have not yet been finalised and prices have not yet been discussed. Other vendors are in similar discussions with network operators including Asustek for its Eee PC.
