Acer spoke about Taiwan’s future as a leader in computing at the UK Parliament yesterday, and how it could ‘play a significant role’ in the Internet of Things (IoT) era.
Acer’s corporate president and CEO Jason Chen was invited as a guest speaker by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for East Asian Business, which facilitates the development of relations between businesses in East Asia and the UK.
And Chen told UK Parliament that his hope for Taiwan, as ‘a leader in computing, smart devices and electronics, can work with the UK to overcome existing barriers, build the IoT network and embrace the exciting future together’.
“I am most delighted to share my views at the House of Lords of how Taiwan, with its extensive IT knowhow, could play a significant role in the Internet of Things era,” he said.
Chen highlighted that IoT could become a $250 billion market by 2020 in terms of revenues, and pointed out that despite the mammoth size of data creation expected in the ‘big data era’, there were still many reasons deterring users from choosing the cloud storage solution.
“The Internet of Things has huge potential to transform our world and create many jobs for those on low income backgrounds as well. It was fascinating to hear of Acer and Taiwan’s remarkable story as a leader in electronics and new emerging technology area’s such as IoT”, said Lord Wei, entrepreneur and member of the House of Lords.
Founded in 2011, the APPG brings together Members of Parliament and Peers to help improve the understanding of Britain’s trade with East Asia.
The news comes as Acer retains its position as number one DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector brand in EMEA for the 23th consecutive quarter, with 16.4 per cent market share across the entire region. Acer became the number one in 2008, and says it has maintained this position for almost the past six years.
PCR is working on its Best of British special for an upcoming issue, looking into the state of UK PC manufacturing and comparing it to the high production low-cost manufacturing in Asian countries like Taiwan.
