.uk is second largest ccTLD in Q1

7.5 million domain names registered in Q1 2012

A report by Verisign reveals that the number of registered domain names on the internet now stands at 233 million.

The Domain Name Industry Brief shows that there were around 116.7 million .com and .net domain names registered by the end of the first quarter, a 8.1 per cent increase since Q1 2011.

Verisign estimates that 88 per cent of all registered .com and .net domains resolve to an active website. 17 per cent of these were one-page sites and 69 per cent had multiple-page websites.

The UK’s .uk was the second largest ccTLD (Country-code top-level domain) in Q1 with more than 10 million domains. The top spot was taken by Germany’s .de.

Total ccTLD registrations were around 94.9 million in the Q1 2012, an addition of 4.3 million domain names, or a 4.8 per cent increase compared to the fourth quarter 2011.
