XO to reach first children by October

$100 laptop heads into mass production

Hardware manufacturers have been given the green light to begin mass production of the various components behind the XO laptop, five years after the idea was proposed.

The OLPC project has said in the past that it would take around 3 million units to be produced to make the undertaking viable. The first units should in the in the hands of children by the end of this October.

The world’s largest laptop manufacturer Quanta is producing the unit. The head of software development at the OLPC project, Walter Bender told BBC Online: "There’s still some software to write, but this is a big step for us."
