Whilst any PC internet user is free to access the BBC’s content service, Virgin is currently the only provider offering iPlayer access through its cable TV service, which is accessed via a press of the red button.
Virgin currently boasts 3.5 million TV customers across the UK – so a bit of simple maths shows that its customers have on average viewed three pieces of BBC content each.
Top ranking shows include sci-fi drama Doctor Who and downbeat soap EastEnders.
BBC’s controller of TV platforms Rahul Chakkara said of the numbers: “These early figures indicate a real appetite from viewers to access BBC iPlayer via their TVs and catch-up on their favourite programmes from the comfort of their living room.
“This initial success on Virgin Media underlines the multi-platform appeal of the BBC iPlayer proposition."
