AMD FX-series may ship with sealed cooling unit

AMD and Intel look to bundled liquid cooling for high-end CPUs

High-end retail versions of AMD’s upcoming desktop processor code named ‘Bulldozer’ make come equipped with liquid-cooling components according to an Xbit Labs report.

The liquid cooling solution (LCS) will apparently enhance the degree of stable overclocking and will appear in boxed version of the FX-series of processors as AMD revives the well-regarded enthusiast FX brand.

Citing a "source with knowledge of the company’s plans," AMD is reportedly considering a bundle of an LCS cooler with the eight-core top-of-the-range FX-series processors.

To reduce the usual sort of leak-prone installation issues, AMD is looking to a sealed unit consisting of a CPU ‘water block’ and a separate heat exchanger and cooling fan.

Xbit Labs cited the Antec Kühler H2O 620 as an example of a sealed cooling unit which AMD is looking to mate with the new processors.

The tech site also claimed that AMD arch-rival and market leader Intel is also considering a similar sealed cooling solution for the enthusiast class Sandy Bride Core i7 3000-series.

"Inclusion of such unusual cooling solution may indirectly indicate that AMD needs something extraordinary in order to attract attention and boost competitive advantages of its FX-series chips code-named Zambezi," said Xbit Labs’ Anton Shilov.
