A year after it was first announced

BBC iPlayer coming to iPhone and iPad

An iPlayer application for iOS devices will be soon available, six months after the applications were first approved by the BBC Trust.

The application will be available by the end of February according to a paidContent:UK report. The catch-up TV application is nearing completion at a time when the BBC is making deep cuts to the corporation’s online services.

It’s currently possible to use the iPlayer service via a web interface on iOS devices but the native application is expected to offer a number of improvements. Meanwhile the BBC has yet to announce any plans to bring the iPlayer service to Android smartphones.

The BBC had previously announced that the iPlayer would see a worldwide release on a subscription basis for those outside of the UK. Presumably the new iOS application will be able to access the international version of the iPlayer too.
