The BBC has revealed that the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who, featuring new Doctor Matt Smith, was the most streamed show in 2011.
The Eleventh Hour opening episode was the first chance viewers had to see Matt Smith in the new role and 2.2 million curious viewers turned to the BBC’s digital TV platform to see the show.
The BBC said the next most popular episode was the opening episode of Top Gear with 1.6m views while the critically acclaimed Sherlock remake notched up 1.4 million views.
Christmas day, the BBC iPlayer will celebrate its third birthday. BBC iPlayer boss Daniel Danker said that the Beeb would be increasing investment in mobile and TV.
The public broadcaster recently revealed plans to launch iPlayer worldwide as a commercial venture.
