Best Buy internal data suggests Apple tablet is eating in to mobile PC market

iPad takes 50% of laptop sales

Best Buy’s CEO has hinted that Apple’s iPad is taking market share from laptops.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Brian Dunn said that the retailers internal estimates suggested that “iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50 per cent.”

The revelations come as Best Buy reveals that while sales of larger items such as televisions had fallen dramatically, consumer interest in mobile gadgets like Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle had risen, leading the retailer to generate a 61 per cent boost in profits for the second quarter.

“People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives,” commented Dunn.

“We are really positioning the company to be the place where people can come and see the best of the connected world.”
