Microsoft’s follow up to Vista due for shipping mid-2009

Software giant Microsoft will be launching its latest operating system Windows 7 in the middle of next year, in time for mass adoption on PCs in time for Christmas.

The firm has been relatively secretive on the precise date of the launch up until now, but director Doug Howe told Cnet: “definitely the holiday focus is going to be on 7.”

Apparently, a beta version will be launched early 2009, while it has been hinted that only one release candidate is in the works.

Why can't Microsoft ever fix the previous operating systems before releasing another. All they do is rob people of their money hence why most of my systems run open source with much more stability

I get the distinct feeling that vista is going to go the same way as ME did. Its a rushed in-between OS to fill the gap between XP and 7. As ME filled the gap between 98 and XP... and was crap.. like vista...

I've been running the M3 version of Windows 7 for a week or 2 on my main PC at home an i'm already finding it to be more stable and useable than Vista. Roll on the RTM.

Lost opportunities

Microsoft had an already excellent OS in XP - it just works (as did Windows 2000). It was widely accepted in the corporate market and easy to network. They could have developed this OS without attempting to force upgrades - which just did not happen. I must agree with Darkcat Systems above - Vista's beginning to look like a botched ME job. Whilst trying to emulate Apple features, they've taken their eye off the real competition - Open Source. Business wants stuff that works, day in day out - XP does that. They do not want fancy embellishments that reduce productivity. Windows 7 had better be good and have good commercial reasons to upgrade or the viability of a new OS every couple of years is going to be limited for Microsoft.

To follow up on my last post. Have to be fair to Microsoft and say Vista Home Premium - excellent - run it on my Home Media Center with TV, music, video and pictures. Couldn't do without it. Vista ? Business use bad - Home use - great, knocks the socks off anything else ! Sorry MS.
